Wind the Clock

Image for: Wind the Clock

My grandfather had a mechanical clock on the mantle that he wound every Wednesday. I asked him once why Wednesday — why not Sunday, or the first of the month?

Because Wednesday is when things run down, he said. You start the week with energy, and by Wednesday, the spring is loose. If you don’t wind it then, it stops.

He was talking about the clock. He was also, clearly, talking about people.

By Wednesday, whatever you started Monday with has used itself up. You’re running on something thinner now. And the answer isn’t to push harder — it’s to wind the spring. A real lunch. A walk around the block. Five minutes of warm water over your hands and a few moments of actual quiet. Some intentional care before the rest of the week arrives.

You can’t run on empty and call it strength. Wind the clock today.

What’s one small thing you can do today to take care of yourself right in the middle of everything?
