Happy Earth Day — The Porch Light Goes Outside

Image for: Happy Earth Day — The Porch Light Goes Outside

Today is Earth Day. And I’ve been sitting with this thought: the porch light philosophy works outside, too.

My grandmother’s porch light was for whoever might need it. She didn’t know who. She just kept it on. Steady, available, undemanding. The light was a quiet act of care for anyone who might pass by in the dark.

That’s actually a decent way to think about how we treat this place we all live on. Not with guilt, not with overwhelming obligation, just with the steady, practical care of someone who knows that what’s here isn’t only theirs. That someone else is going to need it after they’re done with it.

One small thing today. Eat something that’s better for the ground. Go outside and actually look at something growing. Clean up a corner of your little piece of the world. Keep the light on for whoever comes next.

Keep the porch light on for whoever comes next — on the street, and on the planet.

What’s one small thing you can do today to take care of your piece of the world?
