The Eve of the Fourth
Friday, and the eve of the Fourth. The weekend is here, the grills are getting cleaned off, and somewhere a kid is already too excited about fireworks to sit still.
There’s a specific magic to the night before a celebration. The anticipation, the preparation, the sense that something good is genuinely on its way. I’d argue the eve is sometimes better than the day itself — all the looking forward, none of the cleanup yet.
Tonight, before the big day: close out your week properly. Whatever July’s first few days asked of you, set it down. The work week is done. What’s ahead is rest, and people you care about, and the particular pleasure of a summer holiday weekend stretching out in front of you.
Let the anticipation be its own gift. Then go enjoy the weekend you’ve earned.
