Indigenous Peoples’ Day
Monday. A holiday for many — Indigenous Peoples’ Day, which more and more places observe on this second Monday of October.
I’ll keep this in my lane, which is the lane of attention. One of the oldest ideas in this space is that the light we carry was lit by people before us. We inherit it. And on a day like today, that idea asks a harder question: whose light was here first? Whose care for this land, these rivers, these hills predates everything we’ve built on top of them by thousands of years?
You don’t have to have all the answers to sit honestly with the question. Learn one thing today about the people whose land you’re standing on — the name, the history, what’s still living and present. Listening is the first act of respect, and it costs nothing but attention.
And rest, if the day is yours to rest in. Then Tuesday, we begin again.
Whose light was here first? Sit honestly with the question. Listening is the first act of respect.
Do you know whose ancestral land you live on — and if not, could today be the day you find out?
