The Firefly Saturday

Image for: The Firefly Saturday

Late June, and if you’re in the right part of the world, the fireflies are out. This is one of the things I love most about this particular Saturday window — there are maybe six weeks in the year when the fireflies are going, and we’re right in the middle of them.

Fireflies are a perfect thing. They’re small and they flash and they don’t demand anything of you. You just have to be outside after dark, and willing to look, and they’re there. Doing their small, improbable, luminous thing.

I think about the porch light when I see fireflies. All those tiny lights, doing their thing without knowing the effect they have. Without needing applause. Just quietly, persistently lighting up.

Tonight: go outside after dark. Look for the small lights. Let them remind you that something doesn’t have to be big to be luminous.

Something doesn’t have to be big to be luminous. The fireflies know this.

What’s a small, luminous thing in your life right now — something that lights up without making a fuss about it?
