June, You Were Long and Golden

Image for: June, You Were Long and Golden

Last day of June. And it’s a Tuesday, which means the month is going out in that reliable, quiet, showing-up kind of way. Not with fireworks. Not with fanfare. Just doing the last thing on the list and closing the file with some dignity.

Thirty days. June gave you thirty days of the longest light of the year. Pride Month. Juneteenth. Father’s Day and the summer solstice arriving together on the same Sunday as if the calendar decided to double up on meaning just this once. Fireflies, if you’re lucky. Warm evenings that lasted past nine. The particular smell of cut grass and sunscreen that belongs only to this month.

And you made it through it. All the ordinary parts and the meaningful parts and the hard parts and the slow parts. June is complete.

Tomorrow is July. Tomorrow, the back half of the year begins. Tonight, let June be what it was — long and golden — and say goodbye to it properly.

Let June be what it was. Long and golden. Say goodbye to it properly.

What’s one word you’d give June?
