The Slow Breakfast
Saturday. And today’s Simple Mission is one of my favorites: the slow breakfast.
Not the weekday version — the standing-at-the-counter, checking-the-phone, fueling-up-and-moving-on version. The real thing. Something cooked with a little care. Coffee made properly and drunk while it’s hot. A table, ideally near a window. No screen. No rush. Just the meal, and the morning, and however long it takes.
The slow breakfast is a small rebellion against the pace of everything. It says: this morning belongs to me, and I’m going to spend the first hour of it well. And something about starting a Saturday that way changes the whole day’s character. A day that begins unhurried tends to stay humane.
Maple endorses this practice enthusiastically, mostly because slow breakfasts have historically involved dropped food. Her motives are impure but her instincts are correct.
