The First Sweater Saturday

Saturday. And depending on where you are, this might be it: the first morning cool enough for a sweater. Not cold — just that first crispness at the edge of the air, the one that makes the coffee taste better and the blanket feel earned.

I keep an informal holiday for this: First Sweater Saturday. It’s celebrated by putting on the sweater — the good one, the soft one — and going outside early, while the cool is still there, and just walking in it for a while. No destination. The walk is the destination.

Fall’s pleasures are quieter than summer’s. Summer gives you the big bright obvious joys. Fall gives you texture — the sweater, the crisp air, the first leaves thinking about turning, the light going amber earlier. You have to pay closer attention to collect them, which is exactly what makes them worth collecting.

Happy First Sweater Saturday, whenever yours arrives. Go walk in the crisp.

What’s your favorite quiet pleasure of early fall?
