The Puttering Season Begins

Saturday. And with the first crisp weekends of fall, we officially enter what I consider prime puttering season.

Puttering, for the uninitiated: small, aimless doing. Rearranging the shelf. Repotting the plant. Sorting the drawer that’s been chaos since spring. Wiping down, tidying up, tinkering with — none of it urgent, none of it impressive, all of it quietly satisfying. Summer is too bright for puttering; it wants you out and doing. But fall — fall practically requests it. The cool morning, the mug of something warm, the house asking for a little attention before the indoor months arrive.

And here’s puttering’s secret: it’s thinking time in disguise. The hands stay busy at low stakes while the mind sorts itself out in the background. Some of my clearest thoughts have arrived mid-drawer.

So today: putter. No list, no goal. Follow your attention around the house and see where it leads. That’s the whole art.

Puttering is thinking time in disguise. The hands stay busy while the mind sorts itself out.

What’s your favorite thing to putter at?
