Welcome to May

Image for: Welcome to May

May 1st. Friday. New month, and it arrives today as a gift — the weekend is already right there, just a few hours away.

May Day has been many things to many people over many centuries: a labor holiday, a spring festival, a moment to recognize what ordinary people do every day to keep the world running. I think all of those versions of the day are pointing at something similar. The dignity in the work. The worth of the person doing it. The way the world only holds together because people keep showing up, quietly and without fanfare, and doing what needs doing.

That’s you. Most days, that’s just you — showing up, doing the thing, keeping your corner of the world in order. It’s not glamorous. It rarely gets acknowledged. But it matters enormously.

Happy May. You’ve earned the arrival of it.

The world holds together because people keep showing up. That includes you.

What’s one thing you’ve been doing quietly and consistently that deserves a moment of acknowledgment today?
