Armed Forces Day
Today is Armed Forces Day, set aside to honor those currently serving in the United States military. Not Veterans Day, which is for those who have served. Not Memorial Day, which comes later this month and carries its own particular weight. Today specifically for the people who are serving right now, in whatever capacity, wherever they are.
I think about what service actually looks like, day to day, for most people who do it. Not the dramatic moments — the ordinary ones. The Tuesday mornings and the Wednesday afternoons. The long stretches of effort with limited visibility into the outcome. The commitment to something larger than your own comfort, made and remade every single day.
That’s a form of showing up that deserves recognition. And it’s a reminder that showing up — steadily, reliably, in the ordinary moments as much as the big ones — is itself a profound act.
Today, hold those in service in whatever way feels right to you.
Showing up steadily, in the ordinary moments as much as the big ones, is itself a profound act.
Who in your life embodies that kind of quiet, consistent service to something larger than themselves?
