Welcome to June — and Pride Month

June 1st. Monday. The official start of meteorological summer, and the first day of Pride Month.

I want to say something simple about Pride Month, because simple is where I live: the porch light philosophy applies to everyone. Every person who shows up at the door. Every person who has ever felt like they weren’t sure if there was warmth inside, if they were welcome, if they belonged.

My grandmother didn’t keep a list of who the porch light was for. It was just on. That’s the whole point. Steady, available, undemanding. A quiet signal that says: you’re welcome here. There’s warmth inside. You don’t have to carry your burden alone.

June is a good month to make sure your own light is on. For everyone who might need it. No conditions attached.

The porch light doesn’t come with a guest list. It’s just on.
