The Slow Middle of a June Week

Image for: The Slow Middle of a June Week

Something happens to Wednesdays in June that doesn’t happen any other month. The light is so long now — it’s still genuinely bright outside at eight in the evening — that the middle of the week loses its usual gray quality. The hump feels less like a hump and more like a plateau with a good view.

Still. Wednesday requires what Wednesday always requires. A check-in. A moment of honest accounting. A glass of water and maybe a walk around the block before you decide that the afternoon is going to go the way you want it to.

Three questions, same as always. How are you actually doing? What do you need? What can you set down for a while?

Then look out the window at the ridiculous amount of light that June is offering you today, and decide to use some of it.

June gives you long light. Use some of it today.

What’s one thing you’d do differently this afternoon if you remembered you still have hours of daylight left?
