The Real First Day

Tuesday. And for most of us, this is the real first day of fall — not the equinox, which is still two weeks off, but the day after Labor Day, when the whole world goes back to work at once and the year’s second act officially opens.

The post-holiday Tuesday is a famously bumpy landing. You’ve had three days of margin, and now the inbox is deep and the calendar is dense and everything wants your attention simultaneously. Here’s the move: don’t try to catch up all at once. Catching up is a myth anyway — there is no caught up, there’s only triage done well or done badly.

Do it well: pick the three things that actually matter today. Do those. Let the rest form an orderly line. The week is short, the season is long, and the version of you that paces this reentry will be worth more by Friday than the version that sprints it.
