Welcome to October (Bring Coffee)

October 1st. A Thursday. And — the calendar being kind — it’s also International Coffee Day, which is the correct way for the coziest month of the year to open.

I’ve said before that I drink more coffee than I probably should. I stand by it. Coffee, for me, has never really been about the caffeine. It’s about the ritual — the first warm thing in your hands on a cool morning, the five minutes where the day hasn’t started asking for anything yet. The mug is a small porch light you hold.

And October is the month that ritual comes fully into its own. The mornings are cold enough now that the warmth means something. The light comes in low and gold. The mug fogs a little when you lift it. This is what the whole year was building toward, if you ask me.

Thirty-one days of the good month ahead. Start today’s slowly. Warm hands, warm drink, no rush.

The mug is a small porch light you hold. October is when it means the most.

What’s your morning ritual — the thing that starts the day before the day starts asking?
