September, You Turned Us Gently
The last day of September — a Wednesday, so the month ends in the middle of a week, the way most things end: not at a clean break, just at the point where one thing quietly becomes another.
Thirty days. September gave you the second January and its fresh-start energy. It gave you Labor Day’s rest and the reentry after. It gave you the equinox — one day of perfect balance, then the gentle tilt toward the making-your-own-light season. It gave you the first sweater, the first soup, the first leaves going early. It gave you remembrance on the 11th and grandparents on the 13th and neighbors on the 28th, and ordinary Tuesdays in between that asked only that you show up. You did.
Tomorrow, October — the heart of fall, the coziest month on the calendar. But tonight, close September the way it deserves: gently, gratefully, with something warm in your hands.
The porch light stays on. It means more now that the dark comes early. Go easy out there.
