Gentle Is Not Weak

Image for: Gentle Is Not Weak

I want to say something about gentleness, because I think it gets misread.

When I talk about going easy, about being gentle with yourself, about softening the approach — I’m not talking about giving up. I’m not talking about lowering the bar or checking out or deciding that effort doesn’t matter.

Gentleness is a strategy. It’s the recognition that you get more out of yourself over time when you work with yourself rather than against yourself. That the inner critic who calls you lazy and inadequate is not motivating you — it’s exhausting you. That the pressure you apply to yourself beyond what’s necessary isn’t producing better results; it’s producing burnout.

Gentle is actually the harder practice. It takes more discipline to be consistent and kind to yourself than to swing between harsh self-judgment and collapse. The person going easy out there isn’t the one who’s given up. They’re the one playing the long game.

Going easy isn’t giving up. It’s playing the long game.

Is there an area of your life where you could get more from yourself by being gentler with yourself?
