The Sunday Before the Turn
Sunday. The second-to-last day of August, and the quiet threshold before the year shifts gears. September starts Tuesday. The fall rhythm — schedules, structure, the annual re-tightening of everything summer loosened — is standing just offstage.
Today is for the gentlest version of getting ready. Not the frantic kind. The kind: a look at the week ahead so it doesn’t ambush you. One small thing prepared. An early night, maybe. And underneath the practical stuff, the more important preparation — deciding what you’re bringing with you across the seasonal line.
Bring the porch sits, in whatever form fall allows. Bring the slower breakfast when you can manage it. Bring the noticing. The season is changing; the practices don’t have to.
Tonight, leave yourself a last light — one small good thing to look forward to in the week ahead. Then rest. You’re ready for the turn.
The season is changing. The practices don’t have to. Decide what crosses the line with you.
What’s one summer practice you’re deliberately bringing into fall?
