The Saturday Errand That Becomes a Walk

You know how sometimes you go out to run one errand and it turns into a whole morning? You stop somewhere you didn’t plan to. You notice something. You end up in a conversation that has nothing to do with why you left the house.

Maple has taught me to appreciate this. She goes out for a walk with an agenda that consists entirely of: let’s see what happens. Every hydrant is data. Every interesting smell is worth a full investigation. She has no concept of the efficient route and is deeply uninterested in my attempts to establish one.

The planned Saturday has its place. But so does the Saturday that becomes something you didn’t expect. The one where you leave the house for one reason and end up somewhere better.

Today, leave a little room in the plan for the plan to change. You might end up somewhere worth going.
