The People You Get to Love

Sunday. Connection day. And here’s the reframe I want to offer this morning: the people in your life aren’t obligations. They’re the point.

It’s easy to lose track of this. The calls become items on a list. The visits become things to schedule. The relationships become one more category of maintenance in a life full of maintenance. And underneath all the logistics, we forget the astonishing basic fact: there are people in this world you get to love, and who love you back, and that’s the whole treasure.

Nobody on their porch at ninety wishes they’d optimized more. They talk about people. The Sunday dinners. The long phone calls. The friends who stayed.

So today, do the connection thing — but do it with the frame right. Not because you should. Because you get to. Call someone and mean it. The privilege is the whole point.
