World Animal Day (Maple Has Notes)
Sunday. And today is World Animal Day, which Maple has asked me to treat with appropriate gravity.
I’ll be brief on her behalf, because she’s a dog of few words. Animals are teachers of the exact curriculum this whole space is built around. They’re fully present — they don’t spend the walk worrying about the next walk. They rest without guilt. They love without an accounting ledger. They forgive faster than anyone I know. And they notice — oh, do they notice — the small things we’ve trained ourselves to walk past.
If you have an animal in your life, today is for the extra attention. The long walk, the good treat, the unhurried scratch behind the ears. And if you don’t, today is a fine day to notice the ones around you anyway — the squirrels doing their frantic October stockpiling, the birds staging their departures, the neighbor’s cat surveying its kingdom from the fence.
They’re all paying attention. We could learn from that.
Animals are fully present, rest without guilt, and forgive fast. We could learn from that.
What’s something an animal has taught you just by being what it is?
